a greeting card contest

here are a couple of funny illustrations i entered in Ohh Deer's greeting card contest.  what better way to 'congratulate' and 'thank' than with loads of little balancing animals and silly things?  i've also included a couple of in-progress shots, so you can see how these bits pile up.  (view my other contest entries here).

polly, puff & powder

just had to show you the cutest cat puzzle ever.  i found this little gem on etsy and gave it to david for christmas.  it's a delightfully furry addition to our collection of vintage tuco mini-puzzles (almost all of the others are landscapes).  perfect for a puzzle challenge!

calories

isn't this vintage hanky hilarious?  i found it at an estate sale in a heap of pretty floral scarves and such. i'm sure it was just intended as novelty, but i like to imagine a lady at a restaurant subtly referring to her handkerchief to decide whether or not another helping of lobster or cabbage would fit into her diet.

here it is pinned to the curtain above my ironing board, so i can
memorize vintage calorie counts for future reference.  (also pictured: my
big bird ring-toss/peg-board and one of my favorite photos by tiffany).

cat collection

growing up, david collected cats, even though he has always been very allergic to them...  during a recent organization spree we found the entire collection packed carefully into a box at the back of a closet.  i had a lot of fun arranging them on our coffee table and taking photos.  i love that he had named them: each had a number written on the bottom corresponding to a name on a small sheet of paper.  (Snowball, Dolores, Athena...).

...speaking of organization, i've been wanting an easy way to share lots of drawings and doodles all in one place, so i started an art blog on tumblr.  so far i've been posting past work that you may have already seen, but very soon i'll start adding new stuff.  i'll still be posting a few art related things here, but if you want to see a lot more drawings, feel free to follow me there (mariegardeski.tumblr.com).

and now for the cats...

dress-up photo booth

last week was old camp birkey, an annual summer camp/reunion with david's family.  the days were packed with all kinds of activities, songs, games and laughs.  one of my favorite parts was shooting portraits of everyone dressed up as their ancestors...  i loved watching the kids pick out their silly costumes.  they really got into it!

i'll share a few more of my favorite photos from the week soon.

i ended up using photos of antique frames to create a poster of all the portraits. we had it printed 3x4' at a local office store for about $6.  so happy with how it turned out!

the santas have arrived

in past years we've offered this design on postcards, but this year we went all out and had it printed on greeting cards.  they turned out great!  they'll be available in the greeting card section of our shop next week.

new in the shop: old friends magnets

we have been cracking ourselves up over these magnets.  each person has developed a unique personality in our minds (and even an individual voice, as performed by david)...

do any of these faces remind you of someone?

(available here).

four

four years, that is.  here is one of the invitations for the small gathering we had a couple days after.  a gathering that may have involved mexican food, singing/story telling, a toast in teeny mugs, the piecing together of a big jigsaw puzzle, and a scavenger hunt in the cemetery.  "how you not gonna" is the title of a song that neither of us have ever listened to...  but the phrase is catchy, at least in our book.

david did the lettering and the banner and i drew the little plants and animals.  i still love how it turned out.

(hooray for four!  hooray for more!)

pretty dinner

a dish i whipped up last night for dinner.  roasted beets and turnips with chickpeas and orzo.  several splashes of balsamic vinegar and lemon juice, plus some spices.  it actually tasted pretty good!  and i love how the beets turned the pasta pink.

giveaway + carried away

i intended to take one or two photos of our notepads for the giveaway we're having on our page...  but when this little character entered the scene i couldn't help but continue shooting.  how could i resist that cute puppy face?  not to mention those tiny hands...

(what a difference some hair makes).

business/playing cards

i meant to share these photos of our business cards a while ago...    although, you may have seen them when we did our first gift pack giveaway.  anyhow, i'm so happy with how they turned out.  almost too good to give away.  i love that it looks like i actually hand-wrote our website and email on each one.

printed by moo.  always great quality.

isn't this cute little briefcase the perfect business card holder?

new in the shop: sad puppy notepad

remember this drawing from a while back?  we had it printed on quality notepads which are now available in our shop.  so if you want, you can urge this mopey little puppy to smile and cheer up.  although, i'll tell you now, he will probably respond:

"actually, i'm not sad."
