My Illustration in REI's Force of Nature Zine

I did this watercolor illustration back in April for REI's new zine: Force of Nature. I was excited to receive a stack of the publication in the mail the other day - Always a treat to see my work in print especially in the company of so many great women artists and illustrators!

Crafterella

Recently I was invited to illustrate "Crafterella", the mascot/superhero of Cut Out + Keep. Since the parameters were pretty open I decided not to draw the usual svelte superhero, but instead re-imagined this lady as a mild-mannered auntie-type.  Her favorite crafts may involve plastic canvas and acrylic yarn, but she could still save your life.

a greeting card contest

here are a couple of funny illustrations i entered in Ohh Deer's greeting card contest.  what better way to 'congratulate' and 'thank' than with loads of little balancing animals and silly things?  i've also included a couple of in-progress shots, so you can see how these bits pile up.  (view my other contest entries here).

fabric design | vintage children's books

i couldn't resist creating a design for this week's Spoonflower contest.  the theme is books & libraries.  i grabbed some of my favorite vintage children's books from the shelf and illustrated the covers in watercolor.  then, for the background, i drew some of the characters from the stories.  i'm pretty happy with how it turned out!  (click here if you'd like to vote).

a few of my watercolor illustrations in progress.  so much fun!
p.s.  this is my first post from the blogger platform (i switched over from typepad).  hopefully you won't notice much of a difference!

watercolor herbs

here's an herb-y design i created and entered in this week's spoonflower contest (only one more day to vote).  looking super-closely at plants, it's fun to notice all the little details; shapes of tiny petals, the angles and curves of serrated leaf edges, not to mention all the variations in color from one leaf to the next.  (this fabric is available here).

nature cake

this is a graphite & watercolor illustration for Spoonful (a delightful australian zine).  i was among a group of illustrators invited to interpret the idea of a tiered cake for the current issue (dedicated to sweetness).  any excuse to draw lots of little plants and animals!

(prints available at society6).

tiny plants

i went to the park planning on drawing twigs, pods and acorns...  ended up being more captivated by the tiny weeds growing under my feet...

available as a print and on various products at society6.  i love how the greeting cards look and wouldn't the framed art print look delightful in an entryway?

oh, and society6 is offering free (worldwide) shipping through sunday (8/25)!  (visit my S6 shop & david's S6 shop.)

society6

david and i are excited to be selling prints of our work over at society6. (click here to see david's page and here to see mine).

i also had fun coming up with some designs that are available on iphone cases, etc.  i rarely use a cell phone, but somehow it's pretty cool to see my drawings on these little rectangles...

below is a screenshot of david's store.  aren't his paintings fantastic!?  the prints are gallery quality on archival paper. each has a 1" white border and is available in several sizes.  i mean, how you not gonna?

the scribble project

i recently participated in the scribble project where artists are invited to attack the same scribble sheets (i chose "loosey-goosey") and interpret the shapes and words however they want.  it was really fun!  the scribble project blog is packed with inspiring entries from all sorts of artists.  lisa, the creator of the project, writes the funniest little blurbs when she posts each sheet.

there is also a scribble project book, which would be great for anyone who wants to draw but doesn't know what to draw.  the prompts and shapes are perfect for helping you "jot down what's in your brain right now".

here's my "scribble" (click on it to see it a little bigger):
